New Mexico Rodeo Council College/High School Challenge

I'm using this blog as a place to post the photo essays that I'm doing for the month of November (got the idea from the DPC thread, but mainly for my own practice since I'll need at least one super polished one for my portfolio).

Here's the first one I put together, to start it off - I shot it before the rodeo started on Friday night. I was covering the rodeo for the paper and also needed a 'wild art' shot, so I went early and shot the people getting ready for it.

The kids fishing for tadpoles and guppies in a mostly dry branch of the river. We caught a ton of them and put them in a tank - there's probably hundreds in that spot, and all of the fish will just die when the water dries up. The tadpoles have to grow into toads first, or they're done for too.

This is an old (early-80's or late-70's) road bike that I got at a yard sale a while back. It's rideable as it is, but it could use some work. I'm going to convert it to singlespeed properly, and possibly put on some flat (or riser) bars. I'd like to get a coaster brake hub, too, but I might just stick with the front brakes.

The first one is my niece in a fabric store, they were looking for some fabric and we played around and shot some photos. Her expression isn't really sadness, it's more like "awww, when are you going to let me take a picture?" The others are from this evening, there was a lightning storm overhead and it made some beautiful skies at sunset. I also shot a bunch of pictures in hope of getting a lighting bolt, and got one decent one... good thing I didn't have to pay for film to shoot all of the duds. It was handheld at ISO 800 and about 1/30th, didn't have a tripod with me.

The first full day, the youth and a few of the adults went from the camp, to a challenge course owned by a christian school about 30 miles away. Most of the exercises and obstacles are designed to make you learn teamwork and overcome limitations, but the zip-line thing at the end is just plain fun.

On Wednesday we went to our annual summer camp/retreat thing a few hours away. I shot a lot of photos, this was one of my favorites. The Hopi dancers from Gallup did a performance on Friday, in their regalia. I would probably have entered this in the natural light portrait challenge at DPC, but I got DQ'ed because I wasn't at a computer to send in an original so I got suspended from challenges for a week.

So I finally got another digital camera. It's a Canon 1D, and I ordered a 28-105 lens for it but that didn't get here yet. Shot a little with my Pentax 55mm, which is super sharp at f/11 (which I shot this photo at, using an extension tube. The second one is a 100% crop).

I like the camera so far, it's pretty huge and heavy, but other than that it seems to be what I was looking for. I still want a K10D for a backup/portrait camera, but that'll have to wait until I can get a zoom tele for this.

He was a hell of a dog, we've had him since I was 6 or 7. He was mostly blind for the past few years and his hearing was going, but he was still happy. Then he got a growth on his throat and was bleeding through his mouth and we had to put him down so that he wouldn't be in pain.

I had my first art booth this weekend, at a local festival/art show - the first day I sold 4 prints and the second I didn't sell any. Pretty disappointing; I didn't even come close to covering the cost of the materials. Oh well, at least I still have all of what I didn't sell, and I can hopefully sell it later.

Here's a shot of a plant that I like pretty well, the plane of focus isn't parallel to the plant so it makes it look kind of soft overall, but in a good way, and I like the bokeh.

Just a shot from under the highway at sunset, one of the bridges is pretty old and it's been retired and the other is part of the highway.
Haven't updated this in a while, mostly because I haven't gotten anything new scanned because I've been completely broke... Next weekend I have a booth selling prints at an art show, and if I don't do well enough there I'm just going to get another real job. Either way, I should be able to afford a scanner or another DSLR before too long and I can either work on my backlog of slides and negs or see the images the same day I shoot them.

Going to space the pictures out a little more now, I have quite a few that I just got back. This one was shot up on the mountain across the highway from me, you can't see the sun rise or set from my house. It's pretty representative of New Mexico... oilfield equipment, dirt, and pretty skies once in a while.

I just left my part time job at Officemax, and I'm going to try freelance photography, so if anyone reading this wants to hire me - yes, I'll probably shoot it, and I'll probably hook you up cheaper than someone else would :P

A shot from some efke KB25 film - I've only tried one roll, but I like
the results very much. It's a film that's apparently made similarly to the films of 50-60 years ago, with high silver content, and of course it's ISO 25 so the grain is tiny and it's really sharp. I got it processed by a place called dr5 in Denver - they process regular B&W film to make positive slides, which project extremely well and scan well too.

Taken with my 1N and Asahi 135mm 3.5 Super Takumar, of my M3 with Voigtlander 35mm color-skopar.

These are some that I printed on photographic paper using a homemade 'enlarger' (very loosely used). It was a cardboard box filled with tinfoil with a hole on each end, a light bulb in one end and the other end open, two sheets of paper as diffusers in the middle, a plastic picture holder with a negative in it taped to the box, then a plate with a 55mm SLR lens in front of that, all inside a changing bag. I taped the paper to the wall in the dark and made the exposure, then developed it in some tinfoil casserole dishes. They aren't straight scans, the contrast was pretty crappy in the prints due to light leakage.

It was a pretty fun project, but I want a real enlarger now... The good thing about it was, all I had to buy was the trays, paper and print developer, which were about 30 bucks. The fixer, lens, and light bulb were only about another 30 actually, and I had the boxes, tinfoil, changing bag, and negative holder.

Well, I guess I failed the whole 2006 thing... congrats to everyone who made it. I'm going to keep doing it as a periodic update blog, and I might update the links section if I stop being lazy...

Here's a shot that was kind of an accident... It was half whited out because I can't load my Leica without wasting the first shot, or the film won't stay on the spool and I'll get very frustrated when I realize I was playing pretend photographer at the end of the 'roll'. The store's scanner apparently compensated for the white half by darkening the rest of the picture, and apparently there was enough DR in the film to make it look decent.

I admit it, I miss digital. I'm also having fun playing with B&W, and I don't regret buying the M3 since I do realize that rangefinders are perfectly suited for some of my stuff, and there's no way I'm selling it. Going to buy at least one camera this year, and I'm thinking about the Pentax K10D because I've been impressed with the M42 lenses I've been shooting, and the 31mm limited looks amazing.

Ugh, I'm way behind on updates. Here's three from film - the first two are on Arista 400 pushed to 1600, I shot them in Durango. The third is Fuji Astia cross-processed to C41. I won't be doing the PAD thing in 2007, so if you guys want to delete me from your lists I won't mind at all... I'll probably update it every once in a while with new stuff though.

Some pictures on B&W film. I really like B&W for some stuff, I'm going to have to start developing it myself eventually so I don't have to wait to get it processed.
I'm proud of the shot of the hippies or whatever in the parking lot, it was on Delta 100 at half a second wide open with my M3 and 35mm 2.5 - definitely couldn't have pulled that off with an SLR :)

...Although, to be honest, I could have gone to ISO 1600 and underexposed 2 stops on the XT and still gotten a usable 640px B&W, but think of the possibilities with fast film.

A photo of a rusty old tank or pipe or something that sits next to the road. Warm, afternoon lighting and Velvia, so the colors are pretty saturated. I love the textures of rust, it's about the most interesting pattern you can see around here.

I know I've been behind, especially on comments and looking at other people's pictures. 12 credit hours equals a decent amount of work, and I somehow manage to equate commenting and uploading to my PAD as work lately, so I usually don't feel like it.
These two are from my 1N. One of them is a double exposure using the fisheye lens, it turned out pretty cool I think. I got my Leica M3, but I won't have a lens for it until tomorrow and of course it's film so I won't be able to post the pictures from it for a couple days. We'll see if I can get by without a digital camera for long - this is the first time since August of 2001!
If I'm able to get a job, I'll probably save up for a 5D or 1Ds next summer.

The other one is a butterfly eating the pollen on some of my aunt and uncle's flowers. They had a lot of them there. I've been busy with plenty of class work lately, so here's three pictures at a time. One of them is at the reception for a photography show at the Civic Center for the photography club that I'm in, my cat picture is on the wall there. We had a lot of rain, and more importantly the area upstream from us got more, so the neighborhood got a LOT of water. Our front lawn was underwater for a while, and so was this oilfield site. The third shot is some fall colors on a dirt driveway - got some good old fashioned trespassing going on to make the shot. I'm going on a trip to Kansas soon, hopefully I'll get some good landscapes and maybe shots of the family. When I come back I'm selling my digital camera and most of my lenses, and possibly my film camera. Going to go to a Leica M6, and I haven't decided which lenses yet. Ideally, a 21mm f/4, a 50mm f/2 and a 75mm f/2.5, but $$$ and no money for a scanner and a PnS digital. Someone come buy my prints!

Sort of an abstract macro - wanted to see what I could do in Adobe Camera RAW; overexposed by a lot, probably 4 stops, then brought it down in ACR and played with the contrast and curves settings. Then took it into PS and cropped pretty far, guassian blur and USM to smooth the edges out, and resized and saved.

We went to the state fair this weekend - my cat photo did really well, better than I've ever done at the fair. It won a first place, best of show, and judge's choice! My other photo, of the moving water (they're all on my portfolio at DPC) also got first place, and my landscape got an honorable mention.
The second photo is from the top of the Sandia mountains - my dad and I took the tram up to the top, and hiked around for a while taking pictures, then came back down. It's really cool, I recommend it to anyone who's in the area.

My photos from the county fair. I entered these three, and all of them did pretty well. I got a best of show for my cat picture, and blue ribbons for the others, which I'm happy about. I can't wait to see how they do in the state fair (I entered the same three). There's more competition in the state fair, and until I'm 19 I can't enter in the Pro section here, even if I've sold prints (which, by the way, I have - an artist friend of ours liked my landscape so much that she bought the one I entered... sweet :))

Three pictures this time, with no exif. They're to show what I did the past three days; the first is an event in Aztec where the owners of hot air balloons set up their baskets and shot off the burners in the middle of the street. There was a band there, and a lot of people. The second is at the annual 'Party in the Park', which is normally on the 4th but was moved to the 2nd this year. A fire truck sprays the crowd with water to cool them down. The third is of a softball game that was being played near where we sat to watch the 4th of July fireworks. The first was with my 50, wide open, the second was with my 28-75, at about f/11, and the last was with my 70-210, wide open.

Flowing water. Used a Tungsten WB in processing, and quite a bit of other stuff with the colors. It's not even reasonably accurate, but it's colorful. I should have colored the rocks yellowish for complimentary colors, but I don't feel like it now.

My mom is helping with a cub scout day camp this week, today I went and practiced my photojournalism type shots. I learned that sunny days suck for shooting, I almost never shoot mid-day and when I do it's overcast. I might be sticking to evaluative metering for days like that, because my standard spot-meter method that usually works even for JPEG's didn't cut it.

Cliffs, on a cloudy night. This spot is about 15 minutes from here, my dad and I have gone there to get some sandstone rocks for the yard a few times. It's next to a well site, and there's cliffs and a lot of boulders on the side of a hill. Cool place.
